My Evolution in Perfume Alchemy

I began making creams, lotions, facial serums, ointments and salves. I loved blending these oils, and sharing my delicious creams with my friends and family. Although I had used essential oils for years, I had a greater number of oils in my kitchen and loved adding them to products to create beautiful scented body oils and lotions. So I stepped this up a bit and started blending the oils to get particular affects to the blending of various scents. These blends grew in popularity and people were asking for a bottle of my blended scents. And blending perfumes was born in me.

I studied the ratios of how to blend a perfume. I explored carrier oils vs. alcohol to blend these precious oils. I learned the balance of base, heart and top notes and the need for absolutes along with essential oils as well as extracts & tinctures to arrive at a well cultivated and original natural scent.

I wake in he mornings and explore new blends in my head. I test these oils on a test blotter and follow it for days. If I like this beginning, I start a blend of 10ml. beginning with the base and up the middle notes to the top. Each addition is sniffed and pondered before drops are added. This process is slow and sensuous. When blended in alcohol, I allow the scent to sit and blend. Once all blended into the alcohol, I try this on my wrist and wait for how the scent evolves. I try this scent on others to get feedback. I add more of something or something new to it if it calls for more. Notes are kept throughout this exploration so I can account for every drop or percentage of a gram. I dab it on me before sleep. If I smell it when I awaken in the morning, I know I have a good base and long lasting perfume. I watch for mood of excitement, pleasure, relaxation or confidence. I watch who I become when I surround myself in this scent. I listen to my scent memories and watch for scent dreams. And if all of these things fall into place, months after adjustments to this blend. I name it and enter it into my notebook of perfumes to be introduced to others.

I find that scent creation is much the same as creating natural food for ourselves and others. The blending and mixing and adding different elements, to come up with a final product that is greater than it's sum is the goal and destination of a great chef and no different than a great perfume alchemist.

Beautiful scents are made for pleasure and joy. What could be more delightful than this?!!!
